Methodology

TaxSleuth.com uses state tax data from Washington’s Department of Revenue and local tax data gathered from various county assessors and municipalities. Using this information, TaxSleuth will estimate how much individuals pay in property tax, sales tax and various other taxes. TaxSleuth links to a separate fee database created by the Office of Financial Management where citizens can estimate the fees they pay.

Calculations are rough estimates. Because there are so many layers of taxation in Washington and because the amount of tax an individual pays is partially dependent upon how many products subject to sales tax are purchased and whether those are subject to additional sin taxes, it is virtually impossible to determine exactly how much a person pays in taxes. Still, TaxSleuth will give individuals a good idea how much they pay to support state and local services, and how different the tax burdens and rates are across the state.

TaxSleuth will be updated with new rates and district information on a quarterly basis, as state and municipal changes go into effect.
